Ms. Griffin is shown with Principal Dietrich and Steenrod Student Council Members

Steenrod Elementary School Student Council members did not hesitate to share their thoughts on school meals!!!

Ohio County Schools Child Nutrition Director Renee Griffin spoke to Cardinal students Thursday about breakfast and lunch options. The students said they really like breakfast at school, and they like the school’s salad bar. They said tacos and calzones are popular lunch selections, and they would like more strawberries, watermelon and cantaloupe as fruit options. Students were pleased to learn that strawberry milk may soon be available to them.

Griffin has been the school system’s child nutrition director since 2010, and she was a student at Steenrod Elementary School before graduating from Wheeling Park High School in 1987. Griffin is a licensed dietician who graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and a master’s degree in community health education.

Griffin regularly visits schools to speak to students about their thoughts on their school’s meals. She often visits schools to let students try potential options before placing them on school  menus. Griffin said it is very important to her to make sure that students are receiving healthy meals while still including their favorite food options.
