Bridge Street students are shown at the YMCA Playground in Elm Grove

Eighth-grade English/Language Arts students at Bridge Street Middle School have been reading, writing and learning about Melody Day, a sixth-grade student with cerebral palsy. The students first learned of Melody from an article in SCOPE magazine in which she discussed designing an all-inclusive playground at her school because she felt left out.

The YMCA recently dedicated an excellent, all-inclusive playground for the community near Bridge Street Middle School, and on Sept. 1, Red Devil students walked to the playground during each class period. While there, students made observations about how the playground is similar and different to Melody’s and traditional playgrounds like those at Wheeling Park and Oglebay.

Bridge Street teacher Heather Vickers said students enjoyed the project and the visit to the YMCA playground. She said it was important for them to be aware of how important such a facility is for children with disabilities.
