Congratulations to Wheeling Park High School seniors Grant Kenamond, Ryan Linder and Kathryn Prather on being named as National Merit Semifinalists.

They were made aware of their achievement today in the school’s Patriot Point in a surprise reception organized by Principal Meredith Dailer. The reception involved their parents, school staff members and Ohio County Schools Superintendent Kimberly Miller. WTRF7, WTOV9 and The Intelligencer covered the event, and Kenamond, Linder and Prather discussed their thoughts on the recognition they’ve earned.

The Patriot seniors are among 16,000 Semifinalists and named in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
