Recently, we caught them working on identifying Greek and Latin roots and stems in words. According to Paths to Literacy, “Learning Greek and Latin Roots is an excellent way to build students' vocabularies and to help improve their decoding skills. It has been said that students who know their roots can effectively double or triple their vocabularies.” These roots and stems help make up the bulk of our vocabulary words, so having a strong understanding of how these roots work can help make our students stronger readers.
