YWCA Contest Winner

A packed board room emphasized many awesome achievements of OCS students at tonight’s BOE meeting! OCS students swept the YWCA’s Project on Racism Contest (not pictured is Bridge Street student Jaxson Updegraff) taking home multiple state awards. Dr. Miller drew attention to beautiful trophies created by CTE’s Graphic Design program for the recent WPHS Speech and Debate Competition (they are also creating upcoming Signature Event Robotics trophies). Dr. Miller also recognized WVDE, WPHS Broadcast Technology students, and a variety of elementary and middle school students who participated in the recent NAEP video.

OCS Board Members recognized recent events, including OVAC WPHS Wrestling and Swimming champions, and recent OCS Archery, OCS Robotics, WPHS Speech and Debate, and Science Fair wins.

The BOE approved two new teachers with TJ Butyn reporting to Wheeling Middle School and Joshua Mason beginning at Wheeling Park High School. Multiple teachers upgraded their professional status, and a variety of coaches and substitute teachers were also approved.

Start times were discussed as this has been a frequent concern, and Mr. Crumm, Administrator of Operations explained our current schedule and what a variety of schedules would look like sliding back start times. He also explained a flipped schedule for students discussing what drop off and pick up times might look like for elementary and middle school children earlier in the day allowing for later drop off and pick up times for high school students. We continue to work in start time focus groups through the OCS Start Time Committee to try to come to a solution that fits the needs of our students. Mr. Crumm offered a variety of potential solutions, and communicated Edulog study findings as well as explained potential options for future Edulog studies if needed.

Both Stifel Fine Arts and J.B. Chambers Community Foundation were recognized for generous donations to robotics, arts, and theater programs.

The next BOE meeting is scheduled for 2/12/24 at 6:00 P.M. at the OCS Board Office.
