Miss Riley
#InstructionalMomentMonday aims to recognize great instructional moments in Ohio County Schools and provide feedback on how to keep the instruction going at home!

This week recognizes Woodsdale Elementary School’s Miss Riley Carpenter.  Miss Riley has been with Ohio County Schools since the start of her career, nearly ten years ago!  She is the epitome of what you hope to see in a Kindergarten classroom: “She’s so nice, polite, kind, she keeps me safe, she’s just perfect!” a young student shares and adds with a smile.

Miss Riley has her class completing spring-themed stations.  These specific stations are bird, bug, and butterfly themed!  Students were divided and travel through each station on a timer.  Some stations focus on fine motor skills, like cutting, pasting, and drawing.  Other stations focus on math skills or writing practice.  Students can be seen completing “Counting the Eggs” with Mrs. Keefer, “Name Nests” with Miss Riley, “Write the Room” independently, and “Early Bird Gets the Worm” collaboratively.  “This is the FUNNEST way to learn!” a student reports.

According to the Center of Professional Education for Teachers, “Station teaching is when content and instruction are divided into distinct components or strands.  It allows for exploration of a topic or skill through multiple perspectives, the opportunity for natural “brain breaks” and movement, and provides an opportunity for smaller group instruction.”

With attention spans estimated at 12-18 minutes, station teaching is a great way to keep young minds engaged!  Willing to try stations at home?  Set up a few activities in different parts of your home.  Students can rotate through a variety of activities, such as coloring, math problems, and writing activities.  Fun, vibrant timers are available on YouTube and can help children pace appropriately.

Thank you Miss Riley for all you do for students!
