Kenamond and Prather
From a pool of quarterfinalists, 625 semifinalists from around the United States are advancing to the final round of the 2024 Presidential Scholars Competition. Two WPHS students, Grant Kenamond and Kathryn Prather, are candidates for this prestigious recognition.

Stellar ACT/SAT scores influence statewide selections for this award.  According to the US Presidential Scholars Fact Sheet, “The scores associated with the top 2- male examinees and top 20 female examinees are used to select candidates from each state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and from families living abroad.”  In addition to this, each Chief State School Officer can nominate ten male and female candidates based on their accolades. From that pool, candidacy materials are shared nationwide.  “Students have the opportunity to become U.S. Presidential Scholars based on three paths of accomplishment.  The majority of the Scholars are selected on the basis of broad academic achievement.  Approximately twenty students are selected on the basis of their academic and artistic scholarship in the visual arts, the performing arts, or creative writing.  And, approximately twenty additional students are selected on the basis of their ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields,” the fact sheet states.

The White House Commission will review all candidacy materials and will annually select up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars.

In addition to this recent honor, Kenamond recently received first place for the annual statewide Math Field Day competition, allowing Ohio County to claim its “first” first place
