Over 1200 students will have the opportunity to go back to school “shopping” in a whole new way. WVU Extension, WVU Medicine, and Ohio County Schools have teamed up to offer a unique opportunity to a number of our elementary programs: Back to School Farmers Markets.
WVU Extension completed programming with a number of elementary schools during the 2023-2024 school year. These programs focused on nutrition and healthy habits, and this final step of programming is a chance to see these lessons in action.
“Students attending back to school nights at West Liberty Elementary (8/14 from 4-6) and Middle Creek Elementary (8/15 from 3-4:40) will have the chance to participate in a mobile farmers market. Students will receive a bag from WVU Extension, and kids will be able to go through and “shop” for items locally sourced from farmers in our area. Nutrition education will also be provided to students during the experience,” states Renee Griffin, Ohio County Schools Nutrition Director.
More elementary schools will have the chance to check out the mobile farmers market during the first nine weeks of school. WVU Medicine, with the assistance of some of their Registered Dieticians, is planning to continue their “Nutrition Goes to School” lessons for many of our young students during the 2024-2025 school year. WVU extension is returning with their nutrition lessons as well.
