#InstructionalMomentMonday aims to recognize great instructional moments in Ohio County Schools and provide feedback on how to keep the instruction going at home!
Mrs. Viakley, 6th grade math teacher at Bridge Street Middle School, never has a dull moment in class. Whether using stations or her textbook’s, Savvas, curriculum, her students typically have both their heads and hands up.
Recently we visited while the students were dividing decimals. Mrs. Viakley does a great job at modeling her assignments. When a teacher models, that means they demonstrate the skill with providing reasons behind each step. After the demonstration, the class usually works through content as a group before trying the content independently. This idea of “I do, we do, you do,” is beyond smooth in Viakley’s class.
Viakley went from table to table not only answering questions, but interacting with each individual student. As one student reports, “She’s just the best teacher.”
Modeling can be used daily. When your child is trying a new task, explain the task to them as you do the task, then work to the point where you try the task together before encouraging your child to try it solo.
Thank you Mrs. Viakley! We are lucky to have you in Ohio County Schools!
