Congratulations to Warwood School teachers Amanda Finley, Ellen Nau and Anne Vopal on earning Math4Life Classroom Educator Grants!!! The teachers were awarded $2,445 that will benefit Viking students!!!

Finley was awarded $715 for her students. She said the funding will be used to purchase math materials and games that will be used in group instruction for grades 2-4. Finley said she was thrilled to learn that she was not the only Warwood teacher to win the Math4Life award.

"I was so excited when I found out that not only myself, but that my colleagues from Warwood School received this grant as well,” she said. “We've got a team of teachers that are very dedicated to improving the math skills for the students at our school. I truly believe that it begins with making Math education fun, engaging and hands on."

Nau received a Math4Life grant in the amount of $810. The funding will be used to purchase hands-on manipulatives for grades 5-8 with a focus on fractions. Some of the items to be acquired are fraction/percentage tiles to be used to “see” equivalent fractions and percentages, “Math-U-See” fraction overlays for a conceptual understanding of multiplying and dividing fractions, “Math Stacks” Classroom Games used to practice math concepts within fun and engaging games. The funding will also provide an upper-grades math manipulative library and guided math workstations book that will provide hands-on learning for other middle school math concepts.

“I am excited to receive this grant to purchase items that I hope will help our students understand important mathematical concepts in an engaging and real-life manner,” Nau said.

Vopal was awarded $900 for her students. She said the funding will be used to purchase a flexible ELMO document camera and ELMO Cast wireless receiver.

“I am very excited to receive the grant to purchase an innovative tool for my classroom,” Vopal said. “I am looking forward to using the document camera to move freely about my room to teach and capture student work, especially when using manipulatives. The document camera will help meet the West Virginia Mathematical Habits of Mind by allowing students to share how they model with mathematics, share their reasoning with others and engage in meaningful math discourse.”
