Wheeling Park High School Principal Meredith Dailer is speaking first hand to college-bound juniors about the importance of the SAT test and how it could impact their future.

Dailer is meeting with students during multiple periods each day this week in the school’s Innovative Learning Center (ILC) to discuss a number of topics regarding the SAT test. The SAT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The SAT is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test created and administered by the College Board.  The purpose of the SAT is to measure a high school student's readiness for college and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. College admissions officers review standardized test scores alongside a student’s high school GPA, high school courses taken, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, admissions interviews and personal essays.

Dailer stressed to students that they can get into college without taking the SAT test. However, she noted that they will not be able to earn scholarships without taking the test. Dailer said students who score highest on the SAT have more options in regard to schools they can attend and more option in regard to paying for college.

Dailer also discussed the resources available to Patriot students for success on the SAT. Park offers both Math and English/Language Arts SAT courses during the day. The school also offers free SAT prep courses on Saturdays through March as well as two full days of courses during spring break. All of those courses will be taught by Wheeling Park staff members.

Dailer said she has enjoyed speaking with the students, and she believes the discussions are important.

“We want juniors taking the SAT to realize the value of great scores on these exams,” she said. “It is our duty to educate them on the cost of college, the Promise Scholarship and the other merit-based scholarships that use college entrance exams, like the SAT, to determine how scholarship money will be allocated. It's also out duty to provide supports to our students to help them achieve their post-graduation goals.”
