Thanks to a sit down conversation with two of Middle Creek Elementary Parent Teacher Association’s (PTA) leadership team, we were able to gain some first hand insight into how the PTA operates, misconceptions and realities behind a PTA, how to get involved at YOUR school, and the real-world impact of a PTA. Read on to hear from Tina Jenkins, current PTA president and WV State PTA President-Elect, and Kara Jewell, current PTA Vice President and soon to be president, Kara Jewell.
What is the importance of parent involvement in a school?
“Parent involvement helps to fill a gap. Teachers have so much on their plate, and we can help with the extras,” explains Jenkins. “We can assist in fundraising and use that fundraising to cover the cost of field trips for students, and plan events,” she adds. “We’re also able to closely support teachers. We do something for back to school as well as teacher appreciation week. We feel it is so important to be there for them in any capacity,” explains Jewell. Both Jenkins and Jewell agree that without a doubt, the involvement in their school’s PTA has strengthened their relationship not only with the school, but with the county as a whole.
What are some misconceptions about PTA?
“A common misconception is that PTA takes a lot of time,” explains Jewell. “Tina (Jenkins) has worked so hard to make PTA accessible and volunteering easy. We are able to break down volunteering into small 30 minute spurts and even have opportunities to help or volunteer from home,” she adds.
How has MCE’s PTA affected change and created opportunities for kids?
“We’re involved in a lot of activities including our fun run, Little Green Thumbs (gardening), pumpkin patches, and various holiday activities,” says Jenkins. The PTA saw 89 members this year, a record year, providing a tremendous amount of opportunity to create memories for Roadrunners. The PTA also offers opportunities for young siblings and future Roadrunners to get a foot in the door early and participate in several of the activities they offer.
What is the principal perception of an organization like the PTA?
“Our Middle Creek Elementary PTA is simply amazing! Over the years, we have built a strong partnership and wonderful friendships, all centered around supporting our students. Their dedication has helped provide new playground equipment, enhanced school celebrations, and countless memorable experiences for our children.
I truly love this group of ladies and feel so blessed to work alongside them. Their support, kindness, and commitment make a difference every single day!” offers Principal Katrina Lewis.
What is your advice to parents hoping to be more involved in their child’s school?
“Just start asking questions,” explains Jenkins. “A lot of organizations feel overwhelmed and don’t even know where to start or who to ask for help. Being able to offer help can make a massive difference.” In addition to school-based opportunities, all public schools offer the chance to be part of LSIC, or local school improvement councils and often Booster organizations as well. At the county level, we love having parents partake in our Parent Advisory Council. As Jenkins stated previously, if searching for ways to be involved, don’t hesitate to ask!
