As part of West Virginia's statewide assessment system, all eleventh-grade students participate in the SAT during the spring of their junior year. The SAT serves as the state's college and career readiness assessment, measuring students' skills in reading, writing, and mathematics while providing valuable information about their preparedness for postsecondary opportunities. In addition to fulfilling state accountability requirements, SAT scores may be used for college admissions, scholarship consideration, and placement decisions, making this assessment an important milestone in each student's high school experience. Wheeling Park High School works to ensure that students are well prepared for the assessment through rigorous coursework, targeted support, and opportunities to practice and strengthen the skills measured by the SAT.

Each fall, Mrs. Dailer meets with all eleventh-grade students to discuss the significant impact that strong academic performance can have on their future opportunities. During these presentations, students learn about the financial benefits associated with maintaining a high GPA and earning competitive SAT scores, including increased eligibility for merit-based scholarships, institutional aid, and other postsecondary incentives. By helping students understand the connection between their efforts in the classroom and potential college savings, the presentation encourages juniors to approach their coursework and SAT preparation with purpose and determination.

khan

Free Resource for SAT

To help students maximize their performance on the SAT, Wheeling Park High School encourages all juniors to utilize the personalized SAT preparation resources available through Khan Academy. By linking their prior PSAT or SAT results to their Khan Academy account, students receive an individualized study plan that targets specific skill areas in reading, writing, and mathematics. This adaptive approach allows students to focus their practice on concepts they have not yet mastered while continuing to strengthen existing skills.

In addition to independent practice, our mathematics and English Language Arts teachers intentionally incorporate Khan Academy SAT resources into their classroom instruction. Teachers utilize practice questions, skill-building activities, and targeted lessons to reinforce concepts aligned with the SAT and West Virginia's college and career readiness standards. This schoolwide approach ensures that students receive consistent exposure to SAT-style content and strategies throughout the academic year.

bluebook

College Board - Blue Book App

Students at Wheeling Park High School also have access to the Bluebook application on their school-issued Chromebooks, allowing them to become familiar with the digital testing platform used for the SAT. Through Bluebook, students can complete full-length practice exams under testing conditions that closely mirror the actual assessment experience. Exposure to the platform helps students navigate the tools available on test day, including the built-in calculator, annotation features, reference sheets, and question navigation functions.

By practicing in the same digital environment in which they will complete the official SAT, students are able to reduce test anxiety, improve pacing, and develop confidence with the format and functionality of the assessment. Combined with classroom instruction and Khan Academy preparation, access to Bluebook provides Wheeling Park students with a comprehensive and authentic SAT preparation experience.
